Case Study: Yokogawa — Mission-ready maintenance solution for the oil, gas, LNG and chemical process industries
The Challenge
In the process industries, applications often involve combustible or explosive dusts, gases, and vapors. Automation systems and service equipment deployed in such hazardous areas must control their electrical energy to prevent the ignition of dangerous constituents. Yokogawa’s technicians regularly perform maintenance on field instruments in remote and potentially unsafe environments. They required a rugged mobile computing solution that was certified to safely operate in hazardous areas.
Mission-Ready Solution
Yokogawa selected the Durabook U11 fully rugged tablet due to its rugged design and hazardous area approvals. The tablet features an Intel® 7th Generation CPU, Windows® 10 Pro, up to 16GB of RAM, quick-release SSD, DOD-level security and a full HD sunlight readable touchscreen display. Designed for workers who face the most challenging operating environments, the U11 tablet is MIL-STD-810G certified for drop (6-feet), shock, vibration, rain, dust, sand, humidity, freeze/thaw, operating temperature range (- 35°F to 140°F), explosive atmosphere, and temperature shock.
The U11 meets MIL-STD-461G for electromagnetic interference and ANSI 12.12.01 Class 1, division 2 hazardous locations. It has an IP65 rating. The 11.6” FHD (1920 x 1080) LCD, features a 10-point capacitive multi-touch panel that allows users to keep their gloves on when engaging with the device. The touchscreen operates even when wet. The hot-swappable battery enables workers to operate uninterrupted when charging isn’t an option. The device also features Durabook’s 3D warranty, which covers all parts and accidental damage for three years.
The Result
Running Yokogawa’s FieldMate software, the Durabook U11 tablet provides technicians and field service personnel the platform they require to configure, commission, and troubleshoot field instrumentation in a variety of situations. Yokogawa’s technicians are able to offer a higher level of service to customers by rapidly programming and calibrating analyzers and instruments in their manufacturing and repair centers. In the field, the U11’s rugged design and hazardous area rating ensure safety for both the devices and their users.
An array of communication options allows field service personnel to interface with numerous types of devices and reduces the need to carry additional tools in order to address the variety of equipment they might encounter. Ultimately, the ability to complete all maintenance tasks in the field curtails hot work permit requirements, saves time and conserves cost.
